Israeli-Palestinian Conflict

Are children *not* anyone below the age of 18? Why the quotations?

A large portion of “anyone below 18” are actually “enemy combatants”?

Well, if the people in charge are using your “reasoning” (and I use the term exceedingly loosely) little wonder they’ve been slaughtering children wholesale…

Hamas has been known for recruiting and training child soldiers for some time.

The woman and children death stats are widely presented as "civilian" casualties. A 16 year old firing a rifle at you, or hurling a grenade is not a civilian, they are an enemy combatant. Even the US fielded soldiers under 18 in WW2.

Briahna Joy Gray is a toxic bigot and her firing was long overdue. Good riddance. And of course both she and fellow grifter Krystal Ball try to whitewash rape denialism and mass death wishing as "criticism of Israel." The Left is more antisemitic than the Right.

Following the panel, Gray told the moderator, “This is the most Islamophobic, racist audience I’ve ever seen,” the New Republic reported. “It’s disgusting. I hope someone drops a bomb on this entire building.”
Criminy, lady. 2014 Tumblr called; they think you're being a bit too much.

Israel rescued four hostages who were kidnapped from the Nova music festival on October 7th. It was a complex daytime raid on two separate buildings simultaneously that Hamas was holding them in at an urban Gaza refugee camp.

Israeli forces rescued four hostages who had been held in Gaza since the Hamas-led attack on Oct. 7, the military said. The news of the operation in central Gaza on Saturday was met with jubilation in Israel, where fear for the fate of the roughly 120 remaining captives has been rising after eight months of war.

During the rescue operation, the Israeli air force struck the town of Nuseirat, where the hostages were rescued, and residents reported intense bombardments. Khalil Daqran, an official at a hospital, told reporters that dozens of Palestinians had been killed and that the hospital’s wards and corridors were packed with the wounded.

Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military spokesman, told reporters that the rescue mission took place around 11 a.m. Saturday, when forces located the four hostages in two separate buildings where they were being held by Hamas militants in Nuseirat. He said the Israeli forces came under fire but managed to safely extract the hostages in two helicopters.

A team of American hostage recovery officials stationed in Israel assisted the Israeli military’s effort to rescue the four captives by providing intelligence and other logistical support, an American official said, speaking without attribution to discuss ongoing, sensitive operations.

The freed hostages — Noa Argamani, 26; Almog Meir Jan, 22; Andrey Kozlov, 27; and Shlomi Ziv, 41 — were kidnapped by Palestinian militants from the Nova music festival on Oct. 7. All four are in good medical condition and have been transferred to a hospital in Israel for further examination, the Israeli authorities said in a statement.

An in depth Twitter thread on the operation.

The proportion of Palestinian women and children being killed in the Israel-Hamas war appears to have declined sharply, an Associated Press analysis of Gaza Health Ministry data has found, a trend that both coincides with Israel’s changing battlefield tactics and contradicts the ministry’s own public statements.

The trend is significant because the death rate for women and children is the best available proxy for civilian casualties.... In October, when the war began, it was above 60%. For the month of April, it was below 40%. Yet the shift went unnoticed for months by the U.N. and much of the media, and the Hamas-linked Health Ministry has made no effort to set the record straight....

Yet throughout the war, the Gaza Health Ministry has claimed that roughly two-thirds of the dead were women and children. This figure has been repeated by international organizations and many in the foreign media, including the AP.

Next time maybe we don't take a terrorist organizations word when it comes to death totals.

It certainly won't help. Gantz was one of the, like, 3 reasonable professionals in this coalition government. He joined after Oct. 7th to show the country had a united front. There shouldn't be any ministerial role changes now since he didn't have one, but it means Netanyahu has to rely even more on the ultra-fundie wingnuts to keep him away from an immediate election and probable prison.

In one message to Hamas leaders in Doha, Sinwar cited civilian losses in national-liberation conflicts in places such as Algeria, where hundreds of thousands of people died fighting for independence from France, saying, “these are necessary sacrifices.”

This is insane. Algeria was never more than 15% French, and every Frenchman knew he could just quickly sail back home to France. Israel is 74% Jewish, nearly all of them descendants of refugees from now-annihilated communities.

I knew the neocons were wrong in their insistence that bombing Germany into democracy meant it would work in Iraq. This is just as obviously stupid. I DID study history, so why am I condemned to repeat it? MULTIPLE times?

The Israeli Supreme Court ruled that Haredi military exceptions are unlawful and that they must be drafted, and banning the paying of government welfare stipends to Haredi yeshivas who don't serve.

Unimaginable. They charged right at the from-day-1 Israeli stalemate of "uh, hey, what ARE you going to do about that Haredi military service and welfare thing?" and dynamited it. It looks like the judiciary is either trying to directly force the collapse of this government, or push Netanyahu towards an Erdogan / Trump -style self-coup.

Por que no los dos? An already-unpopular leader trying to end democracy in a country where everyone has military training is just begging to be overthrown in a violent revolution.

I hope that if he tries to end democracy in Israel, it ends with the Israeli people putting his corpse on display in Tel Aviv like the Italians did with Mussolini
